Who is this course for?
The course is suitable for those who wish to gain a basic qualification related to the care and education of the child from birth to 16 years.
Entry requirements & Application
You will need to satisfy the college that you possess the skills needed for the demands of the course i.e. a minimum of two GCSEs grade C or above, preferably including English, or a distinction at CACHE Foundation or GNVQ Foundation with at least 1 GCSE Grade D or above, plus tutor recommendation.
To apply you must complete an application form. Successful applicants will be required to complete an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure form; this is a requirement as you will be working with children. A suitable reference from your school or an employer will also be required.
What will I learn?
You will study units 1 - 6 and one optional unit. Units: 1. An Introduction to Working With Children; 2. The Developing Child; 3. Safe, Healthy and Nurturing Environments for Children; 4. Children and Play; 5. Communication and Professional Skills; 6. The Practitioner in the Workplace.You will also complete First Aid and Food Hygiene Awareness certificates.You will attend appropriate placements for two days per week e.g. nurseries, infant schools.
Assessment
Knowledge will be assessed through assignments set by CACHE and the centre and a 45 minute multiple choice question paper. There will be continuous assessment of practical work carried out in relation to placements. You will be required to complete a minimum of 80% attendance at college and will be expected to take part in a variety of group tasks, presentations, extra-curricular activities etc. as part of the course. During practical placement you will be required to work with small groups of children under the direct supervision of a qualified member of staff.
On Completion Achievement / Progression
On successful completion of this course you may progress to higher level qualifications such as CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education or NVQ Level 3 Children's Care, Learning and Development, or seek employment in a supervised capacity in a variety of settings e.g. nurse assistant, pre-school assistant, crèche assistant, playgroup assistant, classroom assistant, mothers help.
