The College has been offering courses for year 10 and year 11 learners for many years, providing learning opportunities in subjects such as motor vehicle studies, carpentry, hairdressing, retail, electronics, IT, care and catering. These courses allow learners to achieve qualifications at level 1 or 2 and offer excellent progression opportunities.

There are currently over 300 pre-16 learners from 18 secondary schools attending College, over 200
of whom attend College for 1 day per week. Schools have found that many of their learners
have benefited from the vocational, more practical courses provided at the College. Such courses have also helped schools in planning to meet the pre-16 Learning and Skills Measure.

Options available
The 3 main options available to schools wishing to consider College courses for their year 10 and
year 11 learners are:

- One day per week courses are available for year 10 and year 11 learners in a range of subjects including motor vehicle, construction, care, sport, retail and hairdressing/beauty therapy.

- Learners may also join existing full-time courses at College in a wide range of subjects that include sport, IT, catering, care, carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying, electrical installation and motor vehicle studies.

- Courses of 3 days per week are available for learners who are either disengaged or close to becoming disengaged with school based study.

The College will also be able to design courses to suit the specific needs of individual learners or groups.

The aim of the Courses for 14–16 year olds is to:-

- Complement and enhance the existing curriculum in schools by providing 1 day per week courses
which schools cannot offer.

- Provide an alternative curriculum in a learning environment different to school in order to appeal to learners who have become disengaged with secondary education.

- Have a practical, vocational emphasis, which is linked to local employment and further
education opportunities
