Welsh for Adults         WAG Initiative      

The Welsh language is being increasingly heard in the media, on the street, in the workplace and amongst children.

Maybe you’ve already been learning Welsh for a few years, or you have just made the decision to learn. Whatever your reasons, The College Ystrad Mynach can help you to improve or start your path to becoming a confident Welsh Speaker. 

The College Ystrad Mynach offers Welsh courses in local venues as well as at The College Ystrad Mynach and Rhymney.   These courses run at various times and days through the week, so that you are sure to find a course that is available at a time and place to suit you.  They cover all levels, from Mynediad (Beginners) to Uwch (Advanced).  For more information on your local venue call Alison Kitson on 01443 810139 or email akitson@ystrad-mynach.ac.uk  

Classes are organised by the Gwent Welsh for Adults Centre , based at Coleg Gwent (Pontypool) .

Mynediad 1
Mynediad 1 is an entry level course for complete beginners.  You will learn to speak, write and understand basic Welsh.  Topics covered include:

- Pronouncing Welsh;

- Greeting people;

- Talking about basic personal details and families;

- Discussing interests.

Mynediad 2
This course is a continuation of Mynediad 1.  It is also suitable for people who have some knowledge of the language.  Topics covered include: discussing events in the past and future plans.  On completion, learners are able to sit the WJEC Mynediad exam if they wish to do so. Students enrolling on the course should be able to:

- Pronounce well and use simple patterns e.g. give personal details and simple facts.

- Understand a little basic Welsh conversation.

- Read and understand simple Welsh and respond accordingly e.g. signs and dialogue.

- Write sufficient Welsh to convey personal information or simple facts, for example a postcard.

Sylfaen 1
Sylfaen 1 will build on your existing Welsh Language skills.  This course is suitable for people with a reasonable knowledge of spoken Welsh. The course will continue to expand speaking skills to discuss many everyday subjects, such as family, work and hobbies.

Sylfaen 2
You will further develop your existing knowledge of Welsh.  It is also suitable for people who have a fairly good knowledge of spoken Welsh.  Topics include: the future, giving advice, discussing distance, size and weight and things and people.  On completion of this year, students may sit the WJEC Sylfaen exam if they wish to do so. Students enrolling on this course should be able to:

- Speak in Welsh about every day, familiar situations.

- Understand Welsh orally e.g. telephone messages, conversations about familiar topics.

- Read and understand simple Welsh text, such as advertisements and simple articles.

- Write enough Welsh to be able to convey personal or factual information, such as a note or a message, in the present and past tense.

Canolradd 1
Canolradd 1 is for people who are reasonably confident in Welsh.  Main emphasis is still on speaking but you will also be gradually introduced to a little more writing, reading and listening.  By the end of the level you will feel more comfortable holding a conversation about everyday topics.

Canolradd 2
Canolradd 2 is for people who are confident in Welsh.  Main emphasis is still on speaking but you will also build on your writing, reading and listening.  By the end of the level you will feel more comfortable holding a conversation about everyday and slightly more abstract topics.

When starting this course, learners should be able to:

- Speak Welsh in a variety of social contexts.

- Understand oral Welsh in a variety of situations.

- Read and understand Welsh to attain many tasks.

- Write Welsh to achieve a variety of tasks.

Uwch1, Uwch 2,  Uwch 3
Uwch courses are for people who are ready to move on to Advanced Welsh.  Equal emphasis on speaking, writing, reading and listening.    There is also an increased element of cultural knowledge (literature, media). By the end of the level you will feel more comfortable discussing and writing about abstract topics.    Uwch qualifications are equivalent to an A- level. At the end of Uwch 3, students are able to sit the WJEC Uwch exam. Students enrolling should be able to:

- Speak fluent Welsh in a social and professional context.

- Understand formal and informal oral well.

- Read and understand formal and informal extended written Welsh.

- Write confidently in Welsh in the correct context, for a variety of purposes.

Welsh Intensive Courses
WLPAN is the name given to intensive Welsh language courses.  Classes run by The College typically meet twice a week so as to enable learners to master the basic Welsh as quickly as possible. All emphasis is on conversational Welsh. WLPAN 1  is for absolute beginners, but those who have a basic knowledge of Welsh pronunciation and sentence patterns will have a distinct advantage as the pace will be quite rapid.
