A non-native English speaker, who studied English as a foreign language At The College Ystrad Mynach, has gone on to achieve a Master’s Degree in Computing.

37-year-old Nonglak Donovan was born in Chiangrai, Thailand and moved to Wales to start a family with her Welsh husband.

She began studying English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at The College in 2006, while also working towards a level one qualification in IT support.

During her time at the college, Nonglak won the ESOL Learner of the Year Award and improved her language and IT skills significantly.

Nonglak said:

“Studying at the college has given me the confidence to continue my journey in higher education. I am currently preparing for a computer software exam, and hopefully, I’ll be qualified to teach computing soon.

“If everything goes according to plan, I hope to study for a PhD in the future.”

Her former tutor at The College Ystrad Mynach, Gillian Orr, is clearly delighted with her progress.

She said:

“I’m so proud of Nonglak’s achievements, as she was always so committed in class.

“The support she provided her colleagues was brilliant and she still volunteers at the college to help out current students with their studies.”
