Sports Championship

A BARGOED student has finished third in a national British college table tennis tournament.

Alexandra Evans, who studies Public Services at The College Ystrad Mynach, was awarded a bronze medal, at the British Colleges Sports Championships.

Alex has been playing table tennis since she was nine years old, and qualified for the national finals after winning the Welsh Girls’ Championships last October.

The national championships were contested between regions across the UK, and more than 2,000 students and staff from colleges across England, Scotland and Wales competed in 14 different sports.

College athletes taking part were aged 16 to 19 years and each had qualified to represent one of the championship's eleven regional teams.

Bronze medalist, Alexandra, said:

“I was really happy to take home a bronze medal, as the competition was really tough and involved some of the best players in the UK.

“I’ve been out of the game for four years but to come back and finish in the national top three is amazing.

“My next challenge is to come back and win it next year.”

Gemma Hallett, Sport Coordinator at The College Ystrad Mynach, who also captain’s the Welsh Women’s Rugby Team, was clearly delighted with the result:

“I’m very proud of Alexandra as she’s such a committed student.

“The College has never competed at table tennis before so to take a student to the national championships and come away with a medal is a brilliant achievement for us.”

Bryn Davies, principal at The College Ystrad Mynach, commented:

“I am very proud that one of our students has achieved such a splendid result in a national tournament.

“Our students are driven, intelligent and talented individuals and our staff are always committed to supporting them both inside and outside of the classroom, and Alexandra’s sporting success is certainly an example of this.”
