In an exciting development, learners from two Welsh Medium Schools are taking part in a vocational Motor Vehicle course through the medium of Welsh with The College Rhymney.
The 12 week Motor Vehicle course is available to learners from Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni and Ysgol Gyfun Gynllwy in Year 10. The learners undertake basic car maintenance qualifications including Health and Safety in a Motor Vehicle Workshop, an Introduction to Checking Car Engine Levels and an Introduction to Checking Car Lights through the medium of Welsh under the guidance of tutor Daniel Jones, a first language Welsh speaker. On successful completion the learners are awarded with OCN certificates.
This is the first course that the College has run through the medium of Welsh. The development is in line with Estyn’s recommendations to give more opportunity for learners to continue their education through the medium of Welsh and through a FE/School collaboration project.
“It is important for the College to increase its Welsh medium provision” said Carolyn Donegan, Head of Rhymney. “We are delighted to be working with Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw and Cwm Rhymni and even more pleased that both schools have come back to us with a view to expanding the provision in the new academic year.”
“Both Cwm Rhymni and Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw regard this course as a valuable addition to the vocational curriculum, extending opportunities for pupils and eniching their education,” said Rhian Wyn Dafydd of Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw. “Competition to join the group is keen and the pupil’s attendance and motivation is excellent”.
