Whilst more than half the working population in Wales have poor numeracy skills and one quarter having low literacy levels; one company in Bedwas is tackling the problem head on by signing up to Basic Skills Employer Pledge.
Daniel Contractors whose Welsh depots are in Bedwas and Clydach signed the Pledge in February 2009 and will now provide opportunities for its 700 members of staff to take part in the courses which will improve their reading, writing and numeracy skills.
The company is already experiencing the benefits of the Pledge and has noticed a marked improvement in the confidence and motivation of their staff and communication between colleagues. Comments from staff who have attended the course include “the course made me realise I need to improve my English” and “sometimes I compromise on using words if I am unsure of spelling”.
“We have introduced the Pledge with the aim of driving improvements in Health & Safety, productivity and innovation and to help secure the long term success of our company” said John Limbert, Learning and Development Specialist for Daniel Contractors. “We aim to support staff that wish to participate in all forms of learning and development which is in some way relevant to the organisation, their current role and career potential. The Company wishes to enable staff to enhance their contribution to the organisation as well as meeting the individual’s aspirations for career and self-development.
All company staff are trained for their appointment and then have the opportunity to discuss continual professional development with their line manager. In testament to this commitment Daniel has opened a Skills Academy in Caerphilly dedicated to staff development. The Academy will deliver accredited learning and development interventions with particular emphasis on the skills and knowledge required by people working in the Utilities sector. Daniel is delighted to work with The College Ystrad Mynach to enhance the provision of learning programmes.”
Daniel Contractors sought support from The College Ystrad Mynach in the implementation of the pledge. The College provides advice, support and designs courses to meet the needs of employers.
Samantha Anthony, Basic Skills Development Officer for The College Ystrad Mynach explains that “brushing up on literacy and numeracy skills that haven’t been used since leaving school is beneficial for everyone and can make everyday activities such as form filling and writing e-mails much easier.”
Daniel Contractors have made a commitment to providing educational opportunities for its employees.
The College Ystrad Mynach is currently working with other employers in the Caerphilly County Borough, helping them to implement the Employer Pledge within their organisation. The Employer Pledge is available for all companies. This partnership working demonstrates to both employees and stakeholders the value that is attached to its staff and subsequent success of a company can be attributed to the skills development of its workforce.
