Merthyr Tydfil Institute for the Blind picks up major learning award

MITB picks up major learning award

Merthyr Tydfil Institute for the Blind (MTIB), a registered charity based in the lower Merthyr Valley, has picked up a major award for its approach to online flexible learning for its staff.  Winning the prize in the Small/Medium Company category in this year’s learndirect Achievement Awards means that the MTIB will now go forward to the national awards ceremony in London with a chance of winning the UK title.

The Small/Medium Company Award category in the prestigious annual learndirect Achievement Awards recognises businesses with less than 250 employees who have supported staff to undertake learndirect learning. MTIB has just 57 staff at its HQ in the Triangle Business Park who make frames for the furniture industry, fabricate cards, upholster buttons and produce mops as well as handling the administration of supported work placements.

Working in partnership with The College Ystrad Mynach, MTIB has introduced an onsite learning facility for 12 staff members, some of whom are visually impaired.  The award was presented at a glittering awards ceremony in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Monday 6th July.  Reacting to the award, Adrian Trythall from MITB said: “I took the course and it was great.  The majority of our staff onsite are involved in an administrative role and it can definitely help them.”

Huw Lewis, Assembly Member for Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney also congratulated the MTIB team saying: “MTIB is a fantastic example of a top quality organisation providing much-needed training and skills to people here in Merthyr Tydfil.  John Stacey and his team have a unique focus on the needs of local people and this has helped them go from strength to strength.  This award is recognition of the excellent work undertaken at MTIB every day and it is thoroughly deserved.”

The learndirect Achievement Awards ceremonies are taking place across the UK during the summer to celebrate regional winners. A range of prizes are available and regional winners walk away with a trophy, certificate and a chance to learn a brand new skill such as cordon bleu cooking or flying lessons. Welsh winners will be put forward as finalists to a national awards ceremony in London and are in with the chance of winning an exciting prize.
