A 5-a-side football team from The College Ystrad Mynach will be representing Wales in the British Colleges Cup, after beating College teams throughout Wales.
In a tough competition Ystrad Mynach stormed through the heats beating Crosskeys College, Neath Port Talbot College, Coleg Powys and Deeside College at the tournament held at Swansea outdoor 5 a side centre, beating Coleg Menai (2-1) in the quarter finals, Bridgend (4-1) in the semi finals and Barry College in the final 7-1. As winners of the welsh final the team will represent Wales at Loughborough University early in the new year in the British Colleges cup.
The team is made up of students on the BTEC National Diploma in Sport Years 1 and 2 and are currently training and playing for the College academy in the British College League.
Team coach and College lecturer Neil Smothers commented on the students performance ‘The eight players were absolutely fantastic, all played an equally important part in winning the tournament and every player was involved in every game. We knew that there were 19 Colleges from across Wales competing in the tournament and that there were some excellent teams but every player worked hard and played to their potential. We started a little slowly in the group stages but then when the players got used to playing we got stronger as each game went by and fully deserved to win the tournament. The College football academy has been building and improving slowly and this shows the excellent progress that has been made by the players, coaches and the college and the everybody is absolutely thrilled to have won the tournament and to be the Welsh Colleges National 5 a side champions.
The next game, held at Loughborough University will be played in the new year.
