The list below identifies the grants/funding that may be available to students of The College Ystrad Mynach
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
The Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a weekly payment of £30 a week depending on your household income. The money is intended to help with the day-to-day costs whilst you are at College – such as travel, books and equipment for your learning programme.
You may be eligible for an EMA of £30.00 per week if:
- You live in Wales
- Aged between 16 to 18 on 1st September 2012
- Meet the nationality and residency rules set out in the EMA scheme
- Live in a household that has an annual income of £20,817 or less per year (£23,077 if more than one young person in household)
To qualify for the allowance you have to attend regularly. Application forms will be available from March 2012 at Student Finance Wales by telephoning Student Finance Wales on 0845 602 8845 or from The College.
Assembly Learning Grants (ALG)
The Assembly Learning Grant provides support to help people from low-income families to access and remain in further and higher education.
You are eligible for an ALG of up to £1,500.00 if:-
- You are 19 or over on 1st September 2012
- Your household income is £18,370.00 or less
- You meet the residence and nationality rules set out for the ALG FE scheme
- You are studying an eligible FE course in the UK that involves at least 275 hours of study
- You are not receiving funding for your course from another source.

Financial Contingency Fund (FCF)
The Financial Contingency Fund (FCF) can provide financial help to learners who are experiencing difficulties as a result of low income. In particular, it can help those individuals to pay for nursery fees, examinations, kits and safety equipment for practical courses. Applications forms are available from Student Services.
All applications are means-tested; evidence of benefits or Working Family Tax Credits will need to be provided. The Financial Contingency Fund prioritises certain categories or payments. These can be seen on the Financial Contingency Fund policy.
