FOUNDATION DEGREE IN EARLY YEARS CARE AND EDUCATION Printer Friendly

Who is this course for?

The course is franchised from UWN and is aimed at people who are qualified and / or experienced early years practitioners. It gives practitioners an opportunity to extend their knowledge, reflect on practice, and take a step into higher education. It is an academic, vocational course in which work-based learning is an integral component.

Entry requirements & Application

Entry requirements are: at least 1 A Level with passes in at least 3 other academic subjects at GCSE level, with GCSE Grade A - C in English or equivalent desirable (or an equivalent AS profile), or an Access Certificate, CACHE Diploma in Childcare or BTEC National Diploma in Early Years or Social Care. Accreditation of Prior Achievement (qualifications or experience) may provide exemptions against certain elements of the programme of study. You will need to be employed professionally or voluntarily in a childcare or education setting for at least 12 hours per week. To apply, you must complete an application form. When we receive your application, you will be invited into the College for an information session, written assessment and interview. The written assessment will need to demonstrate your ability to write at a higher level standard. At interview, you will be asked to provide evidence that your employer has given approval for your participation in this programme, and that a work place facilitator will be identified to support you.

What will I learn?

Work based learning is central to the Foundation Degree and this will be an integral element of the academic learning experience. The importance of reflecting on practice is an essential requirement to evaluating professional practice and students will be required to develop ongoing links between the integration of theory into practice and planning for future development.Students will study a range of modules including: Play, Learning and Development; Observing Children; Additional Learning Needs; Safeguarding Children; Equality and Diversity; Developing Effective Teams; Child Health; Researching Children and Professional Practice.

Assessment

A variety of assessment approaches will be used, including written assignments, a case study, projects / presentations, oral debate and a longitudinal professional practice portfolio.

On Completion Achievement / Progression

On successful completion of the course, students will be required to attend a bridging course and interview to progress onto Year 3 of the BA (Hons) Degree in Education at UWN. Students wishing to progress onto the PGCE course will need to check entry requirements with the relevant institution.
